You feel like you can’t be pregnant right now, but those two blue lines are telling a different story.
Take a breath. It’s okay. Let’s take a moment to explore your three options with this pregnancy.
Option 1: Parenting
If you’re thinking about keeping your baby, you’re likely considering parenting, with all its responsibilities, challenges, and joys. If you’re exploring this option, don’t forget to:
- Consider the big picture. If you’re feeling unsupported right now, it’s important to not simply look at your present circumstances to make your decision.
- Have confidence in yourself. You’re more capable than you know – and you have the potential to become the best version of yourself as you become a mom.
- Start building your support system. Find the people in your life who will support you in your decision to care for your baby.
Option 2: Abortion
If it feels like it’s not the right time, you don’t have a strong support system, or you’re not in a good place in your relationship, abortion may seem like the only option that will keep you afloat. Here are a few things to keep in mind when considering an abortion:
- How will having an abortion make me feel? Choosing an abortion is a decision that deserves careful thought. While it effects every woman differently, having an abortion could usher feelings of guilt, regret, or shame.
- Can I afford an abortion right now? Abortion pills in the United States cost an average of $600 without insurance, and surgical abortions range from $500-$8,000 depending on the type of abortion and how far along you are.
- Is my pregnancy in the right place? Having a positive pregnancy test doesn’t necessarily mean that your pregnancy is within the uterus. If your pregnancy is outside of the uterus, a medication abortion (abortion pill) can be dangerous. This is why an ultrasound is important.
Option 3: Adoption
If you don’t feel like you can go through with an abortion, but also don’t feel prepared to parent, there’s a great third option to consider: adoption. These are a few things to keep in mind when considering this option:
- Take your time with your decision. Making the choice for adoption deserves careful thought. Talk things through with a trusted friend or counselor as you sort through your options.
- Prepare emotionally for your decision. Carrying and giving birth to a child can create a whirlwind of emotions, even without the component of adoption. Emotionally prepare by speaking with someone you trust, journaling your thoughts and feelings, and processing your emotions.
- Be aware of your rights as a birthmother. Through the adoption process, it is important to be aware of your rights as a birthmother. Your decisions may include the choosing the adoption agency, selecting the adoptive family, or the involvement of the birthfather.
