ComfortCare Women’s Health offers lab-quality pregnancy testing completely free of charge. If your test comes back positive, our licensed medical team will answer your questions and guide you through your next steps with compassion and respect.
How Long Will My Appointment Take?
Most appointments at our clinic take about 45 – 60 minutes, depending on the services you need. Quality care shouldn’t feel rushed, so we aim to provide time slots that will allow us the space to talk with you about your concerns, questions and options.
Do I Need to Bring Anything to My Appointment?
Just a valid photo ID if you have it!
Can I Bring a Guest to My Appointment?
Yes! If you would like extra support during your appointment, you’re more than welcome to bring a trusted friend, partner, or family member for support. It is not required or expected to bring someone else however, so if you would prefer to come alone that is perfectly fine too.
What Can I Expect at My Appointment?
Every appointment looks a little bit different depending on the results of the pregnancy test, your desired level of support and the needs you may have. Your visit may include:
Lab-quality pregnancy testing
Limited obstetrical ultrasound
STI screening
Education resources on pregnancy options
Why Do I Need an Ultrasound?
A pregnancy test may give you a “yes” or “no” answer, but it can’t give you the answers you need to make an informed choice. An ultrasound can answer three critical questions:
How far along are you?
Is your pregnancy growing within the uterus?
Is there a heartbeat?
While ultrasounds are not required by law before receiving an abortion, they are still the best (and in some cases the only) way to minimize risks associated with abortion.
How Much Will My Appointment Cost?
All of our services are provided at no cost to you.
No insurance. No hidden fees. No financial concern.
I’m Under 18. Do You Have to Tell My Parents?
No, the law does not require us to tell your parents that you came to visit us. Our commitment to privacy and confidentiality is given to everyone, even if they are under 18.
Could I Be Pregnant & Have An STI?
Yes, it’s possible to be pregnant while also having an STI, even if you don’t notice any symptoms.
Untreated infections can pose serious risks to both your health and your pregnancy. If you decide to have an abortion, receiving an STI test beforehand is another way you can reduce your chance for adverse side effects, as it is never recommended to have an abortion (or take the abortion pill) while having an STI.
Are You a Medical Clinic?
Yes. ComfortCare Women’s Health is a licensed medical clinic with experienced staff and a licensed medical director overseeing care. All of your medical care will be performed by a medical professional who has received extensive training.
Abortion Pill In-Depth
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the abortion pill through 70 days (10 weeks) of pregnancy. A medical/chemical abortion procedure uses two drugs to terminate a pregnancy. The first medication ends the pregnancy by blocking the hormone progesterone. This causes the fetal heart to stop and the pregnancy to detach from the uterine lining. Up to 48 hours later, the second medication is taken, which causes strong uterine cramping to expel the embryo/fetus and pregnancy tissue. The abortion pill is not an option for women who:
- are experiencing an ectopic pregnancy
- are pregnant for over 70 days
- have a bleeding disorder or are taking blood thinners
- have a heart, liver or kidney disease
- are allergic to the medicine
- currently have an IUD in place
- have an STI
Before Taking The Abortion Pill
We recommend scheduling a pre-abortion screening if you are considering an abortion. This will help minimize risks involved with taking the abortion pill.
A pre-abortion screening appointment includes time with our licensed medical staff, a medical-grade pregnancy test, a limited obstetrical ultrasound, and STI testing. The four essential purposes for this appointment are:
- Confirming that you have a viable pregnancy.
- Determining gestational age and thus available options.
- Testing to be sure you don’t have an STI (sexually transmitted infection).
- Supporting you and answering all of your questions.
To protect your emotional, psychological, and physical health, before proceeding with an abortion, it is important to have all the information mentioned above.
Side Effects and Risks
Informed consent (meaning that a patient cannot proceed with a medical procedure until given all risks and side effects) is required by law in Virginia. The most common side effects of a surgical abortion include:
- Bleeding and passing blood clots
- Intense cramping
- Nausea and vomiting
- Feeling faint/sweating
If you have any questions or want to know if the abortion pill is right for you, call to schedule a pre abortion screening today.
Unplanned Pregnancy Options
Abortion
If you are considering abortion, it’s important to understand the different types of procedures, when they are performed, and any possible medical or emotional risks. The options available to you will depend on how far along you are in your pregnancy, which can only be confirmed through an ultrasound. While ComfortCare Women’s Health does not perform or refer for elective abortions, we offer free, confidential pre-abortion screenings—including lab-quality pregnancy tests and limited ultrasounds—to give you the information you need before making a decision. Our trained staff can also explain what to expect during the process, answer your questions, and connect you with resources for aftercare if you choose this path.
Adoption
Adoption is often overlooked, but it provides so many benefits and deserves to be seriously considered. There are several adoption plans to consider, including open, semi-open, and closed adoption, each with different levels of contact between you and the adoptive family. You can choose the adoptive family and what you want your relationship to look like with them, providing you with a sense of comfort if you choose this path. At ComfortCare Women’s Health, we can walk you through the adoption process, help you think through your preferences, and connect you with licensed, reputable adoption agencies.
Parenting
Choosing to parent is both a courageous and deeply rewarding decision, though it can come with challenges. At ComfortCare Women’s Health, we offer practical resources, educational support, and community referrals to help you prepare for parenthood. This may include prenatal and parenting classes, assistance with finding affordable healthcare, and referrals for essentials like groceries, baby supplies, childcare, and housing. We’re here to walk alongside you, answer your questions, and make sure you feel confident and supported in your parenting journey.
Abortion Types
There are two types of abortion procedures: medical/chemical abortion and surgical abortion. The type of procedure women undergo depends on how far along they are in their pregnancy, health status, and ability to access emergency/follow-up care.
Medical Abortion (Abortion Pill)
Surgical Abortion
A surgical abortion is a medical procedure that ends your pregnancy. If a woman is more than 10 weeks into her pregnancy and is not eligible for the abortion pill, or in the event of a medication abortion failure, a surgical abortion may have to be performed.

How Far Along Am I?
Pregnancy Ultrasound
Once you receive a positive pregnancy test, getting an ultrasound is an important next step. An ultrasound gives you essential medical details that can help you make a confident, informed decision about your pregnancy.
Also called a sonogram, an ultrasound uses safe, high-frequency sound waves to create images of the inside of your body. This simple, non-invasive scan can confirm how far along you are, verify that the pregnancy is located in the uterus, and detect cardiac activity. Whether you’re continuing the pregnancy or considering abortion, this information is critical for understanding your health and your options.

What is a Pre-Abortion Screening?
Like any medical procedure, abortions carry risks and side effects, but there are some things that can help minimize your risk. Pre-abortion screening is an important set of medical steps taken to help ensure your safety before an abortion. This process usually includes a pregnancy test, an ultrasound, and sometimes STI testing. The purpose is to confirm that you’re pregnant, determine how far along you are, and identify any health concerns—such as an ectopic pregnancy or possible miscarriage—that may require a different type of care.
At ComfortCare Women’s Health, we provide pre-abortion screening at no cost. While we do not perform or refer for abortions, we believe every woman deserves clear, accurate information in a compassionate, judgment-free environment. Understanding your exact gestational age, pregnancy viability, and overall health status is essential for protecting your well-being. Whether you are considering abortion or still exploring your options, we’re here to give you the answers and support you need to make an informed decision.
What if I Have an Ectopic Pregnancy?
An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus—most commonly in one of the fallopian tubes. This type of pregnancy is not viable and can become a serious medical emergency if left untreated. If you’re experiencing sharp abdominal pain, shoulder pain, lightheadedness, or heavy bleeding, you should seek medical care immediately. An ectopic pregnancy cannot continue to develop and the quicker it is treated, the less likely you are to develop serious issues. The only way to diagnose an ectopic pregnancy is through a confirmation ultrasound. While we do not treat ectopic pregnancies, our medical staff can provide early detection and guide you to the appropriate care right away.
It is important to know that the abortion pill is not effective at treating an ectopic pregnancy, and it could potentially lead to serious harm if consumed while experiencing an ectopic pregnancy. This is why we offer ultrasounds to women who are seeking an abortion, because their health could be at risk if they are experiencing an ectopic pregnancy.
When Should I Take a Pregnancy Test?
If you think you might be pregnant, timing is key to getting accurate results. Pregnancy tests work by detecting the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which your body starts producing shortly after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus.
For the most reliable results, it’s best to take a pregnancy test after your missed period. Testing too early may lead to a false negative because your hCG levels may not be high enough to detect yet.
At ComfortCare Women’s Health, our lab-quality pregnancy tests can reliably detect pregnancy earlier than many at-home tests, often as soon as the first day of your missed period. If you’re unsure about the right time to test, our staff can help you determine the best day to come in. Whether your results are positive or negative, we’re here to guide you through your next steps with accurate information and compassionate support.
Decided to Have an Abortion?
If you’ve already decided to have an abortion, it’s still important to take steps to protect your health before moving forward. A pre-abortion screening can confirm key details—such as how far along you are, whether the pregnancy is viable, and if there are any medical concerns like an ectopic pregnancy—that could change your care plan.
At ComfortCare Women’s Health, we provide free pre-abortion screenings that include:
- Lab-quality pregnancy testing
- Limited ultrasounds
- STI testing when needed.
- Information on what to expect with each type of abortion
- Suggestions on places to receive post-abortive care
- List of questions to ask your abortion provider
While we do not perform or refer for abortions, we can give you clear, unbiased information about procedures, potential risks, and what to expect during recovery. Unlike most abortion providers, we do not profit off of your pregnancy decision, so we are able to provide quality unbiased care.
Common Early Pregnancy Symptoms
From recognizing common symptoms to understanding your options, being informed allows you to take confident steps forward. You don’t have to navigate this journey alone.
Here are some of the most common early pregnancy symptoms:
- Missed period (amenorrhea)
- Tender or swollen breasts
- Nausea, with or without vomiting
- Frequent urination
- Fatigue
- Mood swings
- Bloating
- Light spotting
- Mild cramping
- Constipation
- Food aversions
- Nasal congestion
Pregnancy is more than just physical changes; it’s a season filled with new emotions, questions, and important decisions. Every woman experiences pregnancy differently, which is why having trusted information and compassionate support matters. Learning what to expect early on can ease worries and provide reassurance.
What are the Abortion Laws in Virginia?
In Virginia, abortion is legal through the second trimester—generally up to about 26 weeks of pregnancy. During the first trimester, the procedure can only be performed by a licensed physician or a qualified nurse practitioner. After the first trimester, surgical abortions must take place in a licensed hospital. Abortions after the second trimester are only permitted if three physicians agree that continuing the pregnancy would likely cause the patient’s death or result in substantial and irremediable harm.
Virginia does not have a state-mandated waiting period, but informed consent is required. This means providers must share information about the procedure, potential risks, and available alternatives before care is given. For minors under 18, written consent from a parent, grandparent, or legal guardian is required.
Although a patient is not required by law to receive an ultrasound beforehand, it is highly recommended in order to avoid potential risks.
